Add, Delete, Keep and Ignore
In my ipseology research, I have observed how Americans describe themselves online from 2012 through today. One approach I take is to track when individuals add or delete words from their self-descriptions. You can see data on daily adds and deletes in the graphs below.
Green dots and lines are add counts. Red dots and lines are delete counts. In the graph, you can see when Americans stopped describing themselves as ‘belieber
’s (fans of Justin Bieber). In 2013, adds declined and deletes took over.
Contrast with BTS
(the Korean boy band) - who released their first album in 2014 and found fame in the US a few years later.
Below the pop acts, you'll also see when the political hashtags MAGA and BLM soared to popularity within Americans’ self-descriptions.
